2017 FAST Conference: Player Welfare

In the months leading up to the 2017 FAST conference SASMA will be providing you with profiles on our presenters along with a brief description of what they will be covering in their session. Below is a overview of the Player Welfare Lecture which current Adelaide Football Club Player Education Manager, Jarrod Meers will be presenting.

The role of a sports trainer is well defined from the first moments of a Sports Trainer course. Our primary roles are to prevent and manage sports injuries.

With this being said, we all know that depending on the situation and club that we are at we may be needed to perform other secondary roles as well, especially if we are involved with junior athletes. These roles may include being a parental figure, a shoulder to cry on or an ear to speak to. This discussion is designed to help give trainers, coaches and administrators tips on how to deal with the “secondary roles” that we may encounter.

Our presenter, Jarrod Meers has faced these “secondary roles” on many occasions and in many different situations having a vast level of experience working with elite and community level junior and now senior athletes. Jarrod is a former premiership winning coach with the West Adelaide Football Club’s Centre of Excellence program (7 of his players have gone on to be drafted into AFL teams), former Secondary school PE teacher and current Player Education Manager at the Adelaide Football Club. His career has seen him guide and develop young athletes from all across the state and country both on and off the sporting field. His expertise will prove invaluable for all trainers, coaches and educators who are tasked with preparing athletes to take that next step in their sporting careers.

We look forward to hearing Jarrod speak at the conference.
