BOOK HERE / GP SPECIFIC CONCUSSION EDUCATION

The SA Sports Medicine Association (SASMA), through funding from the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing, are proud to deliver our Concussion Education Program to the Sport and Recreation Community for the next three years.

This funding will support the creation of a Concussion Community Education Program and the delivery of this Program across South Australia.

A SASMA Concussion Steering Committee will be established and will be made up of Sports Medicine experts, members, community and Grant Partners (listed below) across SA who will help guide the development of the Program.

We are waiting on the latest concussion report to be released this month from the 6th International Consensus Conference on Concussion in Sport (Netherlands  2022) to form the basis for the Community Concussion Education Program.

Currently, this Program is being guided by the Australian Sports Commission policies, however, we encourage sports to look at

sport specific policies

in the interim as we await the latest guidelines. The SASMA web page has ready to use resources and information

There is much work to do in this space and we are all aware of the ongoing concerns in relation to identifying concussion, the management and framework, referral and rehabilitation back to school, work and sport/activity.

There are multiple stakeholders who all play a role in concussion injury management. Players, Parents, Coaches, Sports Trainers, Club Officials and Administrators of Sport, everyone has a role to play.

Key message:

  • SA Sports Medicine Association is working with the support of the Office for Recreation Sport and Racing to ensure sport/clubs have a process for assessment, treatment and follow up of head injuries. Concussion is currently front of mind, and we have a plan to reduce the impact of head injury in sports participants.
  •  We encourage and need engagement from players, clubs, doctors, sporting associations to ensure processes and standard practices are adhered to.
  •  SA Sports Medicine Association is the peak body in SA providing education for safe sport participation, our members provide expert advice to government, sporting associations and our sports trainers provide important support on the sidelines.

The aim is to reduce long term socioeconomic impact of concussion across sport, school, the community and workforce whilst encouraging a safe return to activity and participation.
