SA Sports Medicine Association (SASMA) was involved with the 2016 Tour Down Under and 2016 SANTOS Women’s Tour. SASMA Sports Trainers worked on both the men’s and women’s UCI Cycling Events assisting the Race Doctors and SA Ambulance Service (SAAS) with providing the medical coverage for the cyclists as well as driving and managing the Green Light Vehicle.

This year our involvement in the tours went to a new level with the Women’s Tour obtaining a UCI Level 2.2 racing meaning that the Women had a greater level of medical coverage as well as more professional teams from overseas coming in for the event.

Our trainers had the privilege of working alongside Race Doctors Dr Bridget Sawyer (Women’s) and Dr Mark Fisher (Men’s). It was also good to have one of our younger doctor members, Dr Daniel Harris, on board as Dr Sawyer’s Assistant for the Women’s Race. Both Race Doctors and their assistants did an amazing job and as an organisation we are proud of the great work they did and the way they represented our organisation on the world stage.
The SASMA Sports Trainers Team for the 2016 Men’s and Women’s TDU’s was made up of:
- Kylie Doecke
- Carol Goddard
- Lauren Edwards
- Viv Bing
- Malcolm Morris
- Bronte Nicholls
- Sue Pascoe
- Airlie Waller

Along with these great trainers Shane Worner, SASMA Sports Trainer, was the Race Doctors Assistant, and SASMA Staff Members Daniel Clark and Jaye Sippel performed the role of Sports Trainers/Medicine Coordinators. A big congratulations to Shane on the great work he did in his role. It was his first year in that role and we look forward to seeing him back there again in 2017.

A big thank you to our team for the amazing work they did throughout the 9 days of cycling. They were extremely professional and showed great flexibility to work with all the different situations thrown at them. They did SASMA proud. We look forward to the 2017 TDU.
