Sports Trainers E-News December 2014

2014 has once again been a very busy year for SMA-SA and in particular for our Sports Trainers Courses.

With a targeted focus on our Level 1 Sports Trainers courses there was a continued growth during 2014 with 12 courses run across the state including 4 outside of the metropolitan region attracting a total of 330 attendees. This included 92 students attending the one day Level 1 Course for University Students of Health & Medical Science degrees. With changes to our Level 1 Sports Trainers course as well as the introduction of a Level 1 Sports Trainers Course designed specifically for Nurses, SMA-SA hopes to see these growths continue into 2015.

In 2014, the Level 2 course was delivered in both an intensive and module format with 57 trainers completing their Level 2 Accreditation. This is an increase of 19% in the number of trainers completing their Level 2. 2015 looks to be following a similar trend with the Level 2 course scheduled for January reaching capacity prior to the end of September. There will be a second Level 2 run in metro Adelaide, as well as courses scheduled for Naracoorte and Port Lincoln.

The popular Sports Trainer Education Series ran again in 2014. The focus was on injury assessment techniques. All three sessions sold out and we received great feedback from everyone who attended. The Education Series will be back again in 2015 with different topics including some topics which will be targeted at specific groups as we try to provide Professional Development for all Sports Trainers. Stay tuned to our website and to your emails for more details.

2014 also saw the introduction of the Sports Trainers Conference series; a series of half to full day conferences run across the state. The team from SMA-SA travelled to Mount Gambier and Port Lincoln as well as holding the annual conference in Adelaide.

SMA-SA appreciates the time and effort that sports trainers across the state put into their sport and we realise that sometimes those in regional locations are unable to attend all the education sessions we hold in Adelaide. The response to this was fantastic with 130 delegates attending the three conferences. Thank you for all who came along and helped to make the conference series a success.

We utilised SMA-SA Professional members and their practices for the regional sessions as well as having Vince Del Bono, Head Trainer for the Adelaide Crows, present in both Mount Gambier and Port Lincoln. Thank you to all of our presenters that helped out with all three conferences.

2015 is already shaping up be a busy year for SMA SA. We have locked in a number of Level 1 and Level 2 Sports Trainers Courses in the months of February and March in both metro and regional locations.

We have no doubt that 2015 will once again be another busy and successful year. Thank you for the great work you do in making sport safer here in South Australia. We look forward to working with you all in the future.

Wishing you and your loved ones much love and happiness for Christmas and New Year.

Looking ahead2015:

Changes to the Level 1 Sports Trainers Course

During 2014 SMA-SA has been working hard to change the way in which the Level 1 Sports Trainers Course is delivered. Our hard work along with the team at Human Kinetics, means that we are now able to offer the Level 1 Sports Trainers Course with participants only needing to attend 1 day.

The Level 1 Course now requires participants to complete theory modules and a multiple choice assessment online before attending the one day face to face module. The online theory allows participants to learn at their own pace and revisit areas that they may need clarification on or did not fully understand the first time they covered it.

Some of the other benefits of this include:

Participants also have access to the online material for two years from the date of registration.
The participants have an understanding of the key concepts and principles behind being a Sports Trainer prior to attending the face to face. This allows us to make the face to face day very practical and scenario based with case studies to assist with applying these concepts to real life scenarios.

2015 Major Events
2015 will be a busy year for South Australia in regards to the number of Major Events coming to town. These include the Southern University Games, Australian Masters Games and the Pacific School Games. SMA-SA are currently looking for sports trainers to provide initial injury management coverage for these events. Expression of Interests (EOI) are currently being taken for these events. If you wish to submit an EOI please contact the SMA-SA Office via email and we will forward an EOI form to you.

Working at events such as these are a great opportunity for you to work closely with other sports trainers you may not normally interact with, learn new skills and work with different sports. These positions are all paid positions.

Online Shopping Cart
At the end of 2014 SMA-SA has introduced a Shopping Cart function to our website. SMA-SA has a range of products from tape to first aid kits to clothing and hats which can be purchased through us. This also includes a full range of products from our National Sponsor Victor Sports. Click here to see the products that are available for purchase.

To access these prices make sure you have logged into the website prior to checking out the Shopping Cart.

Positions vacant:
If your club is seeking trainers to fill empty roles for an upcoming season, then why not advertise the roles on our Positions Vacant page. Just send SMA-SA an email or phone the office to provide any information you would like included.

This is also a great resource for those looking for a change or new opportunities with their Sports Training.

We already have a number of clubs advertising for the 2015 Winter Season.

Upcoming Events:

As Sports Medicine is an ever-changing science and the way that we treat injuries is constantly changing, Sports Trainers are responsible for their learning and keeping their skills up to date.

SMA-SA will be putting on a number of education sessions specifically for Sports Trainers both in metro and regional areas.

Make sure you check the events calendar on the website regularly to see what sessions are coming up.
