We celebrated our 60th Anniversary with an important Gala dinner at Adelaide Oval, attended by Minister Katrine Hildyard and also by many past and current members, with Dr Peter Barnes sharing stories about the start of sports medicine in South Australia and many funny stories of being on the sideline and helping athletes. Salsa dancing was thrown in as well as a wine wall auction and many friends and colleagues caught up after a long break with Covid restrictions.
We coordinated 10 Professional Education sessions in 2022, double than in recent years, including the first Professional Conference in over two years, being delivered to our Members and the wider medical and allied health community.
These sessions included and thank you to all presenters;
- Hot Weather & Sport | February | Presented by Jamie Stanley
- Sideline Series 1: The Acute Knee Injury | February | Presented by Dr Shahram Shahrokhi
- Uni SA Masters of Physiotherapy Research | March | Presented by recent graduates
- Patella Instability: What are the options? | March | Presented by Dr Shahram Shahrokhi and Dr Claire Bolton
- Paediatric Injuries | April | Presented by Dr Mark Ralfe and Dr David Hermann
- Understanding the Modern Netballer | June | Presented by Prof Greg Haff, Erin Smyth, Dr Michelle Smith and Dr Edward Brooks

The Education Program was highlighted by the 2022 Sports Medicine Conference on May 29th with over 70 medical and allied health professionals in attendance at Payneham in what was a fantastic day of education and networking. There were a number of fantastic speakers presenting on a wide range of topics throughout the day – Dr Richard Hillock, James Trotter, Danielle Grant-Cross, Mia Lundquist, Dr Michele Lastella, Olivia Warnes, Sam Offord, Jenny Williams and A/Prof Susan Evans
SASMA in collaboration with the support of the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing delivered a community project in March of this year, 'Sport and Activity COVID Guidelines', helping the community transition back to their sporting clubs and schools post COVID-19. This included guidelines collated by medical professionals and SA Health experts, community posters outlining the simple steps for clubs, athletes, schools and more on how to safely recommence community sport. We launched the guidelines with and ‘Expert Panel Evening’ on March 16th with a number of experts presenting to the community on a number of COVID related issues (including Prof. Nicola Spurrier and Dr Mark Fisher). SASMA continued to provide phone support to schools and clubs during that period.
Other 2022 achievements and highlights for SASMA included our involvement on the 2022 Santos Festival of Cycling (SFOC) in January. It was great to be involved in a fantastic event for our state and a big thank you to our hard-working sports trainers and medical personnel (Dr Mark Fisher and Dr Bridget Sawyer) for making it happen. On top of the SFOC, SASMA continued to provide ongoing sports trainer coverage at a number of community and major events, including over 1300 hours at Netball SA and a further 1000+ coverage hours with School Sport SA and the local sporting community. Special mention to Kylie Doecke for leading our Netball SA trainers through another busy year. Highlights for our trainers was SASMA's involvement in the AFL National Inclusion Cup in Angaston, the Nunga Football Carnival and our ongoing relation at Country Basketball and Cycling events. This could not be done without the important support of our skilled sports trainers who are dedicated to their role in supporting a safe sporting environment on the sideline.
SASMA coordinated a number of Community Education Programs including our Level 1 and 2 Sports Trainer Courses which returned fully to face to face education, following going online through COVID. We also ran a number of Sideline Help and Basic Taping Courses and Concussion Courses which were popular at sporting clubs, both locally and regionally as well as within schools. We delivered education across the following regions, Kangaroo Island, Port Lincoln, Victor Harbor and Port Augusta. We thank all presenters for their involvement in supporting ongoing education.
