SASMA is committed to providing members with meaningful professional development (PD) opportunities to advance the specialised skills and understandings required for a career in Allied Health. It was with this in mind that SASMA offered scholarship opportunities for students and recent graduates to attend Professional Development sessions such as seminars, workshops or conferences that focus on developing their knowledge and skills further.
Our two scholarship winners for 2020 were Oscar Wight and Lucinda Bunge who both graduated in 2020 with Physiotherapy degrees.
SASMA will be running this scholarship program again in 2021 and would encourage all students and recent graduates to apply!
Hear from Oscar Wight and his chosen Professional Development Session:
Having recently graduated from Flinders University with a Master of Physiotherapy, I am currently working in a musculoskeletal private practice setting at Physio Physique. I've always been a sporty individual, having played collegiate tennis in the USA where I also completed a Bachelor of Exercise Science. During my studies, I was involved with SASMA as a Level 2 Sports Trainer.
Recently I attended the APA Level 1 Sports Physiotherapy course in Adelaide thanks to the contribution from SASMA's PD scholarship. The course was presented by experienced APA Titled Sports and Exercise Physiotherapists Matt Belton, Patrick Custance, Mathew Prior & Sam Offord. It covered the sporting ankle, knee, hip, shoulder, spine, functional assessment and retraining of the upper and lower limb, as well as taping. The presenting physiotherapists discussed their clinical experience with various conditions and some tips for diagnosing or recognising these conditions. It was particularly great meeting fellow physiotherapists to practice clinical components of the course and share our ideas with each other. I hope to apply the knowledge I have gained during this course to clientele at work and during my time at the Scotch Old Collegians Football Club.
I'd like to sincerely thank SASMA for the opportunity to attend such a course and set me on my pathway as a sports physiotherapist. This is a great initiative by SASMA, and I wish future applicants all the best with their applications.
