Kate Beerworth has recently been away working as the Physio for the Australian Woman's Cricket Team. Kate Beerworth has now taken up a full time role as their physio! Below is a bit of an insight of her experience in the UK with them!
1. What was the event and what was your role at the event/trip?
Starting in May 2019, I have a full time role with Cricket Australia as the Australian Women’s Team Physio. We have just returned from a successful Ashes campaign in the UK.
3. What kind of work you did whilst you were working at the event / away with this team, e.g. what was a typical day for you?
The Ashes format for women is different to the men. It consists of 3 ODIs, one four day Test match and 3 T20s. My on tour role is to deal with the acute injuries, manage ongoing issues and rehab programs, collaborate with other SSSM staff on player management, attend meetings, perform weekly / post match monitoring, co-ordinating massage services. Every day is different depending on training schedule - skills or gym based, travel days etc.
4. What was a highlight for you?
Getting back into high performance sport with a very talented bunch of athletes. Winning the Ashes in England is not an easy feat and the players won it in emphatic style. They are great ambassadors on and off the field for Australian sport.
5. Who else did you get to work with?
We have a traveling team of 10 staff. The touring Sports Medicine Sport Science staff include myself, Team Doctor ( Dr Pip Inge, Sports & Medicine Physician) and Physical Performance Coach ( David Bailey). We also have a dietitian and sports psychologist attached to the program who didn’t travel on this tour. We also co-ordinate and utilize the services also of local massage therapists
6. What is one benefit or one thing you learnt from working at this event?
It’s early days for me in a new sport but touring with a team is similar across all sports. Sure there are specific sport differences but there are many long days and you need to keep calm, collaborate well and maintain your sense of humor when on the road for long periods of time.
