We thank AHPA members Talia Blythman, Caroline Adams, Hannah Wechkunanukul and Jane Harford for representing AHPA at the CAPHIA Teaching and Learning Forum in September 2023 and manning the AHPA exhibitor booth. Here are some reflections shared by the team.

AHPA is thrilled to announce that registrations to attend the National Health Promotion Symposium 2024 are now open.

On the 22^nd of February during the Welcome to 2024 AHPA event, Dr Belinda Townsend from Australian National University, School of Regulation and Global Governance gave a guest presentation titled Unpacking Advocacy Strategies for Impact in the Commercial Determinants of Health.

AHPA is seeking members to participate in the second pilot of the Health Promotion Leadership and Governance Program.

Join us as we explore the role of politics and power in promoting health in this new online short course.

The AHPA NSW-ACT Branch are calling for nominations on the Branch Committee for 2024/25. All positions on the Branch Committee for 2024-2025 are now open for nomination. On the 4th April 2024 during the NSW- ACT Branch Annual Members Meeting, the Branch Committee will be elected.

Committee members and volunteers get high value, relevant experiences from participating in professional association governance – no matter their level of work experience or seniority.  Committee members are provided a supportive environment to develop skills and apply learnings and connections with like-minded professionals.

AHPA is thrilled to announce the  National Health Promotion Symposium 2024! The national symposium will be held on Ngunnawal Country in Canberra, ACT over two days: Wednesday 9^th – Thursday 10^th October 2024.

AHPA is pleased to call for applications for the AHPA National Mentoring Program 2024. The AHPA mentoring program is for people interested in or working in the field of health promotion. It is a one-to-one relationship between a more experienced person (mentor) and a less experienced person (mentee). 

The Australian Health Promotion Association is seeking to recruit three positions to the national Board to fill casual vacancies until June 2024.

HPJA invites abstracts for a special issue focusing on “Health Promotion in the Western Pacific: celebrating success stories and tackling the challenges.”

We invite all AHPA members to share their feedback on the AHPA membership using the testimonial template. We’d love to hear your reflections on being an AHPA member throughout 2023. 

We are pleased to share the AHPA National Health Promotion Symposium 2023 bursary recipient report.

The Croakey Conference News Service covered AHPA's Health Promotion Symposium 2023, the first in-person event led by the Association since before the pandemic. It was held in the regional Victorian city of Geelong on the traditional lands of the Wadawurrung peoples.

The AHPA office will be closed from Friday 22nd December 2023 and will re-open on Monday 15th January 2024.

The AHPA NSW-ACT Branch had a fabulous time at the University of Sydney Public Health Careers Night on 31 August 2023.

On Wednesday 30 August, AHPA and the Australian Women's Health Alliance co-convened a meeting of organisations supported under the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care Health Peak and Advisory Bodies Program.

We are pleased to announce the AHPA members that have been selected to participate in our inaugural Health Promotion Leadership and Governance Pilot Program.

The South Australian Preventive Health Award is a joint initiative of the South Australian branches of the Australian Health Promotion Association (AHPA) and the Public Health Association Australia.

The AHPA (WA Branch) is seeking a consultant to coordinate the AHPA WA Branch's Health Promotion Scholarship Program.

On 30 May 2023, AHPA delivered an event that explored the Australian health promotion registration system from a range of perspectives and the influence of registration on health promotion in Australia.

The AHPA Student and Early Career Practitioner Committee hosted a networking event on 31 August 2022, with insights from AHPA Executive Officer Rebecca Zosel. 

This week (2nd-9th July) is NAIDOC Week 2023. National NAIDOC Week is an opportunity for all Australians to learn about First Nations cultures and histories and participate in celebrations of the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth. For our Association, it is an opportunity to highlight our commitment to constitutional recognition of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people through a First Nations Voice to Parliament and to reconciliation, health equity and sovereignty. 

Women in Public Health (WPH) is a network of women from across Australia working to advance gender equity in public health leadership.

AHPA is seeking organisations to participate in a Health Promotion Ethics Pilot Project.

On Tuesday 6 June, NSW Health's Regional Health Division presented an overview of the new Regional Health Plan, with a particular emphasis on actions to be taken within the strategic priority of 'Keep people healthy and well through prevention, early intervention and education'.

On Tuesday 30th May 2023, AHPA hosted an event to showcase the Australian health promotion registration system.

On Wednesday 24 May 2023, the Vic/Tas committee hosted a Lunch & Learn session for AHPA members to meet and connect. Speaker Jenn Lacy-Nichols discussed the Commercial Determinants of Health and participants were able to gain knowledge on debates, issues and challenges.

On 16 May 2023, AHPA together with Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA), Foundation for Alcohol Research and Education (FARE), the Australian Democracy Network and the Human Rights Law Centre hosted a Health + Democracy Forum.

On Thursday 27 April 2023, AHPA together with the Public Health Association Australia (PHAA) members Stephen Bendle, presented an update on firearm safety efforts in Australia: National Gun Control Update: why we need to remain vigilant and what action you can take.

On Monday 3 April during Global Public Health Week 2023, AHPA together with the Council of Academic Public Health Institutions Australia (CAPHIA) and Public Health Association of Australia (PHAA) hosted an event, Preparing Public Health Professionals & Associations for New Challenges: An Australasian Perspective.

We thank Doctors for Nutrition for providing AHPA with a complimentary pass for the recent Nutrition in Healthcare Conference 2023 in Melbourne and were pleased that Melissa Morris, AHPA Vic-Tas Branch Committee member, was able to attend.

Call for Expressions of Interest (EOI): Editor-in-Chief, Health Promotion Journal of Australia (HPJA)

The Health Promotion Journal of Australia and the Australian Journal of Rural Health are partnering on an exciting project with SMS4Dads to explore the unique experience and needs of marginalised fathers. Both journals will publish special themed sections on marginalised fathers in parallel commencing in the lead up to Father’s Day, 3rd September 2023. The collection of themed sections will then be compiled into a future Virtual Issue to feature on the Wiley Online Library homepage for each journal.

The QLD branch has recently launched the call for professional development (PD) bursaries open to members who reside and/or study in the state of Queensland. Applications close at 5pm AEST on 17th March 2023.

AHPA NATIONAL MENTORING PROGRAM 

The AHPA® mentoring program is for people interested in or working in the field of health promotion. It is one of the strategies to build the professional capacity of our members.

Congratulations to Krushnadevsinh Ravalji, or Kano, for winning the 2022 VicHealth Future Changemaker Award.

VicHealth's new and exciting Future Changemaker Award was supported by the AHPA Vic-Tas Branch.

Kano is an independent youth advocate, working closely with young people from diverse backgrounds to promote inclusion, physical activity and physical health. A true changemaker!

We are pleased to announce that Natalie Flew was selected for the AHPA NT Branch’s prize for The Most Outstanding Student in Health Promotion and has received a complimentary 1-year AHPA student membership and $95 cash prize. Congratulations Natalie.
