2016 Members Conference Presenter Profile: Jan Stirling

At this year’s SASMA Members Conference we are providing medical and allied health professionals the opportunity to hear from highly sort after experts in their field. Below is a profile on Jan Stirling, who will be talking about her experience with coaching adolescents. Jan will also be on the panel for the discussion of Early Specialisation: Strengths & Pitfalls.

Jan Stirling first came to prominence in the world of basketball as a player, having played 163 WNBL games between 1982 and 1991, and represented the Opals at the 1975 FIBA World Championships. But it was what Jan accomplished as a coach that truly set her apart.

Jan began coaching the Adelaide Lightning in 1993 and during her time as coach guided her team to five consecutive WNBL Grand Finals, winning a hat-trick of titles from 1994-1996 and another in 1998. Her ascension to the Australian Opals coaching role was a natural progression, and she coached the Opals to the Gold Medal at the 2006 FIBA World Championships in Brazil. The first-ever gold medal by a senior Australian basketball team would be surrounded by silver medals at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games, bronze at the 2002 FIBA World Championships and gold at the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

In 2008 Stirling was awarded a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for her contribution to sport, and in 2015 she was inducted into the International Basketball Federation's (FIBA) Hall of Fame.

There is less than three weeks to register so head to our Members Conference Page for more information or to book your spot today.
