2018 SASMA Members Education Series – Imaging and Pain

2018 SASMA Members Education Series – Imaging and Pain

'Treat the patient, not the image’

The third and final SASMA Members Education Series of 2018 was held on Tuesday the 21st of August at Prince Alfred College with a hot topic of ‘Imaging and Pain’. The evening was presented by Tim Cocks (Chronic Pain Physiotherapist, NOIGroup) and Dr. Sunil Gupta (MSK Radiologist, Benson Radiology) who provided attendees with current insight around imaging, pain and patient awareness.

SASMA’s education evening hosted over 40 attendees in person, with a record number of attendees also accessing the webcast live on the night. All took advantage of the networking opportunity at the beginning of the night.

The session focused on 3 Clinical Cases where a patient presenting had a complex pain presentation and multiple findings on imaging. The three regions of focus were lower back pain, knee pain and forefoot pain.

Discussions following the presentations were based around the 3 Clinical Cases, focusing on trends and appropriate decisions as part of each case, as well as general management of the patient. Questions taken throughout were thoughtful and provided more discussion particularly around assessing and counselling patients with chronic pain.

SASMA work very hard to develop these education sessions for our Member’s. Although this was the last of the Members Education Series for 2018, there are still education opportunities to come for 2018.
On September 12 we are running a Recovery Masterclass, where Dr Shona Halson will provide attendees with current best practice and research in relation to minimising fatigue and maximising recovery in athletes. A special focus during this workshop will be on the latest research on sleep and recovery. This session will also be available online via a Live Webcast if you are unable to attend in person.

We look forward to seeing you there.
